Matt Shoemaker

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker has a “small skull fracture” after he was hit in the head by a vicious comebacker off the bat of Seattle Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager during the second inning of Sunday’s 4-2 win.

With the ball travelling at 105 mph when it left Seager’s bat, Shoemaker was given every precaution as he was helped to a local hospital to undergo a CT scan.

Initial readings from the scan revealed Shoemaker suffered a small fracture in his skull and was experiencing some swelling where blood had clotted, the Angels later announced.

He will remain hospitalised overnight before meeting with a neurologist on Monday to further assess the damage.

“Matt is speaking, interacting and doing well considering the trauma,” the team wrote on their official Twitter account.

After staying on the ground for an extended period of time, Shoemaker ultimately got up while holding a towel to his cut head.

Shoemaker had allowed just one hit with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings before the incident.
