Constroversial South African hip-hop singer Jub Jub has been involved in a car crash that has left five school pupils dead and two critically injured.

A fifth learner died in hospital from his injuries following yesterday’s accident near Protea North in Soweto, South Africa. Four other learners were killed instantly when Jub Jub-whose real name is Molemo Maarohanye- was allegedly drag racing with a friend in their Mini Coopers when the accident happened.

Inspector Kay Makhubele said Jub Jub and his friend were allegedly racing at about 4pm yesterday when they collided with an oncoming vehicle.

“Their cars veered off the road and hit seven pupils who were walking on the pavement. Four of them died at the scene while the other three suffered multiple body injuries,” Makhubele said. One of the cars caught fire but firefighters managed to extinguish it. The injured pupils were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, in Soweto.

Makhubele said Jub Jub and his friend were not seriously injured. “They were arrested and will be charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving,” Makhubele said.

Local ward councillor and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Soweto leader Dlangezwa Mvelase said that the community was ‘very angry’ over the death of the boys.“The law must deal accordingly with people who play silly games on the roads, killing innocent children,” said Mvelase.

Meanwhile, injuries may prevent hip-hop artist Jub Jub and another motorist from appearing in court today after the fatal accident in Soweto. The drivers are also in hospital after they sustained injuries during the accident
